Disruptive educaiton - also in the educational sector
The Internet does two things: Distrubution ( wipe out old fashion information distriution networks) and datamining ( only works with big data. The cost is nearly free and it gives powerful information
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN EDUCATION? Early moments: the big schools are geting online. Campus is biggest online. The most profitable and the fastest growing. Offering a choice to campus students/lore students from other schools/ Univ should build online courses. Consequences: everyone has their own online system. Infrastructure for transfer is already in place. What happens when students will choose among universities?
ex: UCLA took an obscure course online. They got 350 new students the following year. Standford has their entire first year courses online. Oxford will not do this. What happens then, when the profit is used to build facilities and competence. Attract professors with high rankings. The pressure will be on the ones who do not engage with online teaching. 4000 universitiies in the US.- they are now threatened by the new online educational options. The big univ will probably reach 1000 000 students. The ocal univ. will be curators - a few courses and embedded in local communities. UK - open university. The market is new, and students are not yet ware of their possibilitie. Competition will increase. Ex Hollywood actors did not do ada, but now they do. Protect your brand Harward, Stanford..., take a course but not get the degree is also possible. The development will go international.
Univ. are great bundlers: University services will become unbundled. Ex airline ticket: flight, baggage, food: stipped out and you pay extra for that. This is going the same way in education. Bundlign is great for suppliers. It gets fuzzy when you have to select yourself. Bundling is the enemy of consumers. Ex newspapers, deliveres, news, personal ads, comics, tv schedule etc. Did all jobs, but were not the best. With the Internet things were done better in other places. Univ offer extra curicular activities, libraries, research, sports, entertainment, training, new buildings. Students are paying for that. No choice. Can online teaching begin to unbundle that? Yes. Curators will help you to build your own degree.
When course material is digitalised, you can create outcome transparency. Big data where the content can be evaluated and compared. Students follow jobs, that is where they will tend to go. Unbundlig data infrastructures will but univ under pressure. 25% finish highschool in the world. 3/4 of people are wasted. Teachers; 42% of time, the teacher does not come, tur up. Global access problem. MORE CHOICE & MORE ACCESS = finding best talent!.
Learning analytics: Assessment - data. Finding the best modality, time of day, questions, Finding out how you lern best. Using the patterns of others, that are similar to you, to help you learn better= Learning analytics. Can predict failure.
